One of the primary things that the team looked at was the safety of the ingredients
Any food not deemed safe for dogs was removed from the list. Any time there are ingredients from a rendering facility, the food should not be given to your dog. Examples would be road kill or meat that has spoiled.
Safe ingredients aren’t always the best choice for your dog as they could cause health issues that are difficult to treat. Digestive issues and irritable bowel syndrome are just two of the examples of concerns to watch for in dogs that have consumed foods that are made of unhealthy ingredients. Obesity is another concern as many of the ingredients in foods are full of fat.
What ingredients you should look for in the dog food
Healthy ingredients that you should look for when searching for a top dog food are fish, chicken, eggs, and liver. Oats, Omega-3 fatty acids, vitamins C and E and various fruits and vegetables should be among the first ingredients that you see on a package of dog food. Combinations of ingredients and the ratios factor also matter in selecting a quality food for your dog.

- Protein is a component that you want for your dog when he’s younger, but as he ages, you should cut back on the protein that he received and focus more on ingredients that aid in joint health.
All types of varieties of dog foods available were examined by the team, including wet, dry and frozen. Products without any kind of meat as the first ingredient were removed from the initial list as well as those that contain soy, corn and other carbohydrates.
The dog foods selected were chosen based on aspects such as the healthy ingredients in the food, the price and the breed of dog that the food is suited for compared to others.
